Sarai has lived and breathed nightmares since she was six years old.

She believed she knew every horror and was beyond surprise.

She was wrong.

In the wake of tragedy, neither Lazlo nor Sarai are who they were before. One a god, the other a ghost, they struggle to grasp the new boundaries of their selves as dark-minded Minya holds them hostage, intent on vengeance against Weep.

Lazlo faces an unthinkable choice—save the woman he loves, or everyone else?—while Sarai feels more helpless than ever. But is she? Sometimes, only the direst need can teach us our own depths, and Sarai, the Muse of Nightmares, has not yet discovered what she’s capable of.

As humans and godspawn reel in the aftermath of the citadel’s near fall, a new foe shatters their fragile hopes, and the mysteries of the Mesarthim are resurrected: Where did the gods come from, and why? What was done with thousands of children born in the citadel nursery? And most important of all, as forgotten doors are opened and new worlds revealed: Must heroes always slay monsters, or is it possible to save them instead?

As soon as I finished ‘Strange the Dreamer’ I knew I needed to pick up ‘Muse of Nightmares’ I was so addicted to the story.

Muse of Nightmares follows on from the events in Strange the Dreamer, almost immediately picking up where that book left off. I loved that we really didn’t miss any time from the first book. Laini Taylor has however added in a new element, a back story which brings new characters into the the tale really adding more depth to the story.

I still love Lazlo Strange more than ever, he’s still a quirky, quiet librarian that believes in things others only want to see as myth or as impossible. In Muse of Nightmares he has really gained new strength and really developed as a character.

We explore more of the Citadel and the secrets that it is hiding throughout Muse of Nightmares as well as what makes the characters tick and why they are the way they are, this is part of the struggle that Lazlo faces in this new world.

Muse of Nightmares was a poetic and lyrical ending to a magical duology, I can’t imagine one without the other, they are two parts of a whimsical whole that will suck you in until you turn the last page.

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

Welcome to Weep.

Why on why did it take me so long to pick up this book?! I finally found it on Audible and knew that the writing was lyrical and wanted to experience it as an audiobook.

I honestly love Strange as a character and a narrator. He is so sweet and innocent and completely and utterly adorable. He has an innocence that doesn’t make him naive but conscientious and kind. I loved when -as readers- we experienced things in his perspective.

The world the Lani Taylor creates really revolves around Weep, a lot civilisation that Strange studies in his spare time as a Librarian Apprentice. Its a land of magic and myth and when Strange talks about it gave me whimsical vibes.

It was really interesting to look back on what Weep was really like before everything happened and before the name was forgotten, there is such a big difference between what people thought of Weep and the reality of those who lived there. That contrast was really interesting to see.

Overall Strange the Dreamer is a magical and whimsical story. Lani Taylor writing is so lyrical and it really lends its self to the story. It’s a story that had different perspectives that you want to hear from all the time.

I loved my time reading this book and am so sad that its all over!

New Years Resolutions Book Tag 2019

I saw this tag in Jenniely’s blog you can check out her post here!

Being the New Year – kind of still – I decided it was a good time to complete this tag…

V.E. Schwab! I’ve really been wanting to pick up the ‘Darker Shade of Magic’ series and I really hope I can get to it this year!

I only got this book last year so kind of makes sense that I haven’t read it yet, but ‘Strange the Dreamer’ is one I want to get to in 2019.

100% ‘A Court of and Fury’ By Sarah J. Maas. I mean I want to reread the whole series but I think this is my favourite book of them all!

Rick Riordan! I’ve read the Percy Jackson Series, The Heroes of Olympus Series and the books that are out in the Trials of Apollo series. This year I really hope to get to the the Magnus Chase series.

So I didn’t really get any books for Christmas but I did purchase this book around Christmas time. I haven’t heard to much about ‘Nimona’ by Noelle Stevenson but it looks really good and I can’t wait to get into it.

The Seven Realms series By Cinda Williams Chima. I’ve heard a little bit about this series and it sounded like something that I’d enjoy, so I am keen to get to it in 2019.

I am currently working my way through this series which I started at the end of last year. I’ve ended up finishing ‘Throne of Glass’ and ‘Assassin’s Blade’ and am currently reading ‘Crown of Midnight’. So excited to hopefully finish this series in 2019.

I do set reading goals. For 2019 I want to try and read 45 books!

In 2019 I want to try and buy less books as well as decreasing the gap between my read and unread books.

I tag anyone and everyone who wants to participate in this tag!

A to Z of TBR: Q, R, S & T

I started this a while ago after reading a post on Book Please‘s Blog.  I have been meaning to continue this series but completely forgot about it. So what better time than during Blogmas?

For ‘Q’ I have ‘The Queen’s Rising’ by Rebecca Ross. This is one I’ve been wanting to get to for ages but then I start a new series and BAM its back down the TBR list. This is one I really want to get to in the beginning of 2019.

For ‘R’ I have ‘Reign the Earth’ By A.C. Gaughen. This is one I can’t believe I didn’t get to in 2018. Its definitely on the early 2019 list. It seems like such a great read.

For ‘S’ ‘Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor is at the top of the list. I really want to get to this one.

Finally for ‘T’ I have ‘Tower of Dawn’ By Sarah J. Maas. I mean I still need to read all the books before this one to get to it, but thats what I’ll work on doing.

What does you TBR deep dive look like?

Books I wish I’d Gotten to in 2018

2018 has been a great year for reading. I’ve really gotten back into reading as a hobby and enjoying reading again. However there are only so many books I can get to in a year these are some books I wish I’d gotten to this year but haven’t been able too…

This is a series I discovered in the later part of 2018 and I am really sad that I haven’t gotten to it yet! Excited to read in 2019.

This is another series that I haven’t been able to get to in 2018, I honestly am now realising that there are so many amazing books I haven’t gotten to in 2018.

I know, I know, I know, I can’t believe I haven’t read the Darker Shades of Magic trilogy yet! I don’t even know why I haven’t picked it up yet.

This is another one I think I need to priorities in 2019 because OMG how have I not read this yet?

Another series that I am already late to the party on but haven’t read…. I can’t even explain myself at this point!

Six of Crows and the Shadow and Bone series are both ones I want to get to as well.

There are so many series I haven’t gotten to, but also so many that I have read so lets hope I can smash out a few in 2019!

Those are some of the big series that I haven’t gotten to in 2018, What are some books you haven’t gotten to yet this year?

Last Book Haul of 2018

So once again I broke a book buying ban and purchased some books…. I know, I know, a book buying ban is to stop you buying books. Oops!

I’ve accumulated these books over the last few months and decided I would haul them all together in one final haul for 2018! (Who else can’t believe 2018 is almost over?)

The year: 2000. The setting: Los Angeles. A gorgeous virtuoso of an actress had agreed to star in a random play, and a basement-dwelling scenic carpenter had said he would assay a supporting role in the selfsame pageant. At the first rehearsal, she surveyed her fellow cast members, as one does, determining if any of the men might qualify to provide her with a satisfying fling. Her gaze fell upon the carpenter, and like a bolt of lightning, the thought struck her: No dice. Moving on.

Yet, unbeknownst to our protagonists, Cupid had merely set down his bow and picked up a rocket launcher. Then fired a love rocket (not a euphemism). The players were Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, and the resulting romance, once it ignited, was . . . epic. Beyond epic. It resulted in a coupling that has endured to this day; a sizzling, perpetual tryst that has captivated the world with its kindness, athleticism, astonishingly low-brow humor, and true (fire emoji) passion.

How did they do it? They came from completely different families, endured a significant age difference, and were separated by the gulf of several social strata. Megan loved books and art history; Nick loved hammers. But much more than these seemingly unsurpassable obstacles were the values they held in common: respect, decency, the ability to mention genitalia in almost any context, and an abiding obsession with the songs of Tom Waits.

Eighteen years later, they’re still very much in love, and have finally decided to reveal the philosophical mountains they have conquered, the lessons they’ve learned, and the myriad jigsaw puzzles they’ve completed, in a book. Featuring anecdotes, hijinks, interviews, photos, and a veritable grab bag of tomfoolery, this is not only the intoxicating book that Mullally’s and Offerman’s fans have been waiting for, it might just hold the solution to the greatest threat facing our modern world: the single life.

To tide me over until I can buy books again (check out my posts for more details) I decided to combine July and August book hauls into just one haul. All these books I purchased before the ban kicked in. I did get some shipped so I had to wait a little while before I could haul them.

Anyway, here we go!

Laia is determined to break into Kauf—the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison—to save her brother, who is the key to the Scholars’ survival. And Elias is determined to help Laia succeed, even if it means giving up his last chance at freedom.
But dark forces, human and otherworldly, work against Laia and Elias. The pair must fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene—Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike.
Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own—one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape…and kill them both.

Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. But while hunting for a way to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would aid her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight.
And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. But in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that will stop at nothing to ensure Elias’s devotion–even at the cost of his humanity.
