Spring Book Haul

Ok so TECHNICALLY I am meant to be on a book buying ban and I feel like I was doing pretty well, I mean I didn’t purchase a single book for a good 30 + days, which I my opinion is a display if great self discipline – although I could just be saying that to make myself feel better.

However come the last week of September I went into school holidays. Now I had the intention to keep up the book buying ban, but I just did not work. I found myself scrolling through books looking at all the amazing ones I wanted to add to my collection/ now massive TBR.

So before I try and justify my pitiful lack of self control any longer lets jump into the books I purchased in the last few weeks.

Only, unlike all of Death’s companions before, Iris’s body goes on the one-way journey along with her soul, arriving in a kingdom never meant to sustain a living girl.
Left behind with Niko, her girlfriend, and Luka, the boy her sister loves, Lina searches for a way to save Iris. But as Lina unearths the dark secrets that bind her family to parallel fates of loss and immortality and Iris tries to outwit Death on his own terrain, a power resurfaces that even Mara, the original witch mother, fears. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.
Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

July/August Book Haul

Book buying bans… A familiar experience for any book buying fiend. I am currently in the midst of a book buying ban. To tide me over until I can buy books again (check out my posts for more details) I decided to combine July and August book hauls into just one haul. All these books I purchased before the ban kicked in. I did get some shipped so I had to wait a little while before I could haul them.

Anyway, here we go!

It’s dangerous work–the day-folk kill whatever they don’t understand–but Willa will do anything to win the approval of the padaran, the charismatic leader of the Faeran people.
When Willa’s curiosity leaves her hurt and stranded in the day-folk world, she calls upon the old powers of her beloved grandmother, and the unbreakable bonds of her forest allies, to escape. Only then does she begin to discover the shocking truth: that not all of her day-folk enemies are the same, and that the foundations of her own Faeran society are crumbling. What do you do when you realise that the society you were born and raised in is rife with evil? Do you raise your voice? Do you stand up against it?
As forces of unfathomable destruction encroach on her forest home, Willa must decide who she truly is, facing deadly force with warmest compassion, sinister corruption with trusted alliance, and finding a home for her longing heart.

(Book #1 in the Strange the Dreamer Series)
The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.
What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?
The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

Synopsis

The Winter Solstice. In a week. I was still new enough to being High Lady that I had no idea what my formal role was to be. If we’d have a High Priestess do some odious ceremony, as lanthe had done the year before. A year. Gods, nearly a year since Rhys had called in his bargain, desperate to get me away from the poison of the Spring Court to save me from my despair. Had he been only a minute later, the Mother knew what would have happened. Where I’d now be. Snow swirled and eddied in the garden, catching in the brown fibers of the burlap covering the shrubs My mate who had worked so hard and so selflessly, all without hope that I would ever be with him We had both fought for that love, bled for it. Rhys had died for it.

To the stars who listened, Feyre’
‘To the dreams that are answered, Rhys’

My Thoughts

I don’t think I can rave about this novella enough. I know I’m probably biased since I started and fell in love with the Court of Thorns and Roses series this year and honestly I could follow Feyre’s story anywhere, particularly in the Night Court.

You probably couldn’t say there was a great plot to this little slice of Feyre’s story, but being a novella that is assisting to bridge the gap between the initial series and the next, I couldn’t be happier with it.

The story follows Feyre in her first Solstice in the Night Court along with all the other characters we love, jumping between the perspectives of Rhys, Feyre, Morrigan, Cassian & Nesta. Allowing readers to learn more about each of these characters from their perspective.

I loved being back in the world and seeing how the Courts were managing after the events at the end of ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’. It just made me love the series and characters even more.

I honestly only wish their were more pages, although there could be 1.000 pages and all I would want is more.

The novella was thoroughly enjoyable to read and experience. If you are looking for a spectacular plot you may be disappointing, but if you are continuing the series it will be a great bridge novel for what is to come.

Synopsis:
Looming war threatens all Feyre holds dear in the third volume of the #1 New York Times bestselling A Court of Thorns and Roses series.
Feyre has returned to the Spring Court, determined to gather information on Tamlin’s manoeuvrings and the invading king threatening to bring Prythian to its knees. But to do so she must play a deadly game of deceit – and one slip may spell doom not only for Feyre, but for her world as well.
As war bears down upon them all, Feyre must decide who to trust amongst the dazzling and lethal High Lords – and hunt for allies in unexpected places.
In this thrilling third book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series from Sarah J. Maas, the earth will be painted red as mighty armies grapple for power over the one thing that could destroy them all.

My Thoughts:
When I got to ‘A Court of Wings and Ruin’ I had already binge read ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ and ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’ and I was addicted! I just wanted to read more. I purchased the hardcover copies (just because) and I thought after reading the 624 page ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’ that I was on the home stretch, that was the thickest book. Oh boy was I wrong. ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’ was 699 pages! I could not wait to see how everything was going to go!

War was practically upon Perythian. It was interesting to see how each of the courts and the High Lords were going to react to the prospect of war and I was not disappointed. It was great to see all the characters develop in a situation that calls for so much.

‘A Court of Wings and Ruin’ delivered. It gave us more back story to characters, development of the characters as well as development of the world as a whole. Which in my opinion is fantastically done especially for a third novel in a series.

There were places near the end of the story where I was so enthralled in the plot that I was almost in tears (almost because I was on public transport at the time). The plot is so well written that from page one you are enthralled, you feel as though you are there with Feyre and Rhys and the rest of the Night Court, and I just became more and more invested with every turn on the page.

I cannot wait to read ‘A Court of Frost and Starlight’ to see where the story goes.

I will say that I feel now I have very high expectations for any other Faerie based novel. ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ has developed such a strong group of Faerie Characters that it might be hard to match!

My Rating:
Plot: 9/10
Ease of reading: 4/10
Character Development: 8/10
World Building: 8/10
Quality of Writing: 8/10

Synopsis:
Feyre survived Amarantha’s clutches to return to the Spring Court—but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can’t forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin’s people.
Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms—and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future—and the future of a world cleaved in two.
With more than a million copies sold of her beloved Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas’s masterful storytelling brings this second book in her seductive and action-packed series to new heights.

My Thoughts:
I don’t think I’ve been this addicted to a book/series in a while. I was able to finish the 624 page sequel to ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ in 6 days… While working full time. It’s some kind of miracle, I know.
The writing of Sarah J. Mass is just amazing. I am completely pulled into the world. She is able to make you feel one way about a character at the beginning of the story and completely reverse that thinking by the end.
I was unsure where the story was going to go after the events of ‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’, wondering if it would in fact be possible to have more that could happen. Boy was I wrong. ‘A Court of Mist and Fury’ was just as action packed as the first novel.
I couldn’t put it down.
There was a great amount of action along side amazing world building – honestly if I could live in Pyrithian, I just might – as well as some incredible and realistic character development, not only for our protagonist Feyre but also for out support characters as well.
I honestly cannot wait where book #3 ‘A Court of Wings and Ruin’ is going to to take up, I’m here and I’m ready to find out!
