Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play will receive its world premiere in London’s West End on July 30, 2016.

It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ was a book I picked up as part of the N.E.W.T.S readathon in August. It fulfilled the prompt for an E in Defence Against the Dark Arts which was to read the first book that came to mind.

The Cursed Child takes place 19 years after all the events in the final instalment in the Harry Potter series. In it we follow Severus Albus Potter as he grapples with life in his brothers shadow and learning to accept who he is.

This story is also written in play format and has been adapted to what I have heard is an incredible production. However as a story it was something that I read as a seperate entity to the Harry Potter series. It was still something that felt like meh story. I wasn’t committed to the outcome, which is unfortunate as I am a HUGE Harry Potter Fan!

Overall I felt like this story was not necessary as a continuation of the Harry Potter universe. I don’t feel like I gained more knowledge of the wizarding world in any real way. I wish I could of gotten more out of it.
